Southern Cross Soloists (SXS) today announced a significant artistic leadership transition as the company looks to the future following a year of growth, renewal, and success.
Following the tenure of Co-Artistic Directors Ashley Smith and Margaret Blades, who have guided the company through a vital period of transition in 2024–2025, the Board of Directors is delighted to announce that Triple Grammy Award-winning flautist and curator Tim Munro has been appointed Artistic Director of Southern Cross Soloists from 2026.
This change marks the beginning of a new chapter for one of Queensland’s premier chamber music ensembles, as it finalises its celebratory 30th “Pearl Anniversary” year in 2025 and continue its expanded presence across Queensland, including the annual SXS Chamber Music Festival at Tamborine Mountain.
Ashley Smith and Margaret Blades said:“It has been an honour to serve as Co-Artistic Directors for Southern Cross Soloists during its period of transition. We thank our extraordinary musicians, audiences and supporters, executive team, and Board for their trust. We are delighted to hand the baton to Tim Munro and are excited for what comes next. We leave our roles with full hearts and deep gratitude to the musicians, audiences, donors, and partners who make Southern Cross Soloists thrive.”
Munro, who directed the acclaimed 21st SXS Chamber Music Festival in 2025, will lead the company into an exciting new era, building upon its legacy of musical excellence and innovation.
Incoming Artistic Director, Tim Munro, said:“There has never been a more urgent time to remind one another of the power of gathering in community. Chamber music, at its heart, allows for this gathering—an art form built on listening and empathy. My journey as a professional musician began with Southern Cross Soloists, and I’m honoured to return to lead this extraordinary ensemble. I look forward to expanding our education and community work in the regions, deepening our presence on the Gold Coast, and continuing to bring together artists and audiences through the beauty and intimacy of chamber music.”
The SXS Board also warmly welcomes esteemed violinist and educator Susan Collins to the Board of Directors. Collins brings decades of artistic and academic expertise and will play an important role in guiding the organisation’s future.
Incoming Board Member, Susan Collins, said: "I’m honoured and delighted to be joining the Board of Southern Cross Soloists. Having enjoyed performing with the ensemble and sharing friendships within its musical community in past seasons, I have long admired its innovation, generosity of spirit, and commitment to chamber music in Australia. I look forward to supporting Tim Munro in his new role as Artistic Director and to contributing to the continued growth of this vibrant organisation. I also warmly acknowledge the wonderful work of Ashley Smith and Margaret Blades during their 2025 tenure as Co-Artistic Directors.”
SXS Chair, Marg O'Donnell AO expressed gratitude to the outgoing Artistic Directors for their dedication:
“Ashley and Margaret have led Southern Cross Soloists with artistry and grace through a pivotal time. We are deeply thankful for their contributions and delighted they will continue to perform with the ensemble in 2026. We now look forward to a vibrant new chapter under Tim’s visionary leadership.”
This leadership transition comes as Southern Cross Soloists celebrates the success of securing multi-year organisational funding from Arts Queensland (2026–2029)—a major milestone supporting the company’s vision for sustainability and artistic excellence.
