His music is imbued with a refreshingly vibrant sense of quirky chromaticism and slightly off-kilter charm. The 'Divertimento' is no exception. In five short movements, a non-stop stream of notes burst forth from the flute with the piano framing with an often jazzy accompaniment. His music is typically slow and quiet, usually for piano solo, and with a hauntingly beautiful capacity to suspend time, placing the listener in a meditative vortex. Gnossienne is a made-up term with no clear meaning. A breathtaking display of instrumental virtuosity, the striking athleticism of the original violin part is here amplified by its rendering for wind instruments (as arranged by Tania Frazer).
